Washington — President Donald Trump held a press conference Wednesday following the conclusion of the G7 Summit, defending his administration’s recently announced agreement with Iran while discussing international security, foreign policy, and ongoing diplomatic efforts with allied nations.
During the appearance, Trump described the U.S.-Iran agreement as a major diplomatic achievement designed to reduce tensions in the Middle East and restore stability to critical international shipping routes. The proposed memorandum of understanding would require Iran to reduce its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and permit international access through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for limited sanctions relief from the United States.
The president pushed back against criticism from members of both parties who have questioned the framework’s effectiveness and long-term impact. Trump argued that the agreement helps avoid a prolonged military conflict while maintaining leverage over Tehran should Iran fail to comply with its commitments.
Questions from reporters also focused on the ongoing investigation into a February airstrike that struck a girls’ school in southern Iran. Trump stated that he does not believe the facility was intentionally targeted and said he is awaiting the results of the Pentagon’s investigation before drawing final conclusions. More than 175 children and teachers were reportedly killed in the incident.
The president additionally discussed meetings held with world leaders during the summit, including conversations regarding Ukraine, energy security, and trade cooperation among G7 nations. According to reports from the summit, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and signaled support for continued military assistance to Kyiv.
The press conference came amid increasing debate in Washington over the administration’s foreign policy strategy. While supporters have praised the Iran agreement as a potential breakthrough that could reduce the likelihood of additional military conflict, critics contend that the framework lacks sufficient guarantees to prevent future escalation.
Despite the criticism, Trump maintained that the agreement represents a significant step toward regional stability and economic certainty, particularly regarding global energy markets. He reiterated that the United States would respond forcefully if Iran violates the terms of the proposed arrangement.
The agreement is expected to face additional scrutiny from Congress in the coming days as lawmakers review the details of the proposed framework. A formal signing ceremony has reportedly been scheduled later this week, pending final approval from participating parties.
